Yes there are Asians that do not eat duck and I am one of them. I would duck from it and get bewildered looks in return. and then I grew up. It’s like not eating brussel sprouts as a child but now crave garlic bacon sautéed cabbage babies as an adult. You see, I do not completely eat duck, but I’ve learn to appreciate it. I love the crispy skin from a roast duck dipped in that savory brown sauce. While in Thailand I had my first Peking duck roll and was hooked. If you have ever had Peking duck, you know it’s all about the crispy skin. I grew up eating salty hard boiled duck eggs with a bowl of congee for breakfast. The best poached egg I’ve ever had was a duck egg – see photo below. It was beautiful. Bravo Barley Swine in Austin. BUT I will not eat duck meat, no thanks, respectfully.
This masterpiece was my screen saver on my phone for months. It took precedence over my new wedding photos. When I heard that my favorite food trailer in Austin (The Odd Duck -irony?) shut down when their brick and mortar store Barley Swine became successful I was devastated, but excited to try a meal there. I was not disappointed. Although my $4 pork belly sliders were no longer a regular on the menu, BS blessed us with this dish. Poached duck egg with popcorn, zucchini salad, goat cheese smear and foam dusted with – bacon powder. Yes you read that correctly, bacon powder. It was too pretty to eat, but I did, and it was, how do you say it?.. Delectable. Yes I know I am about a year too late posting this meal as this is from the 2012 menu, but there is something about this photo that makes me happy.
On another note, the Odd Duck is slated to open a brick and mortar store sometime this year, but until then I leave you with this:
Pork belly slider, beet salad, pulled pork sammy, wild boar chili, grilled quail over carrot salad, polenta with poached egg. Please open soon Odd Duck, I beg of you.
